Once we have received all your application materials, we will notify you that your application is complete. Your process may include a phone or video interview. It normally takes 3-4 weeks for a decision to be made about short-term positions and longer for positions with long-term commitments. Work Week Volunteer  |  volunteer

Join us for a week of work and community, transitioning our remote community from one season to the next! Whether this is your first visit or your fiftieth, Holden invites you to lend your time and talents for community projects and summer or winter preparations. All arrivals will be on Monday with departures on Sunday with no exceptions. Space is limited, so please apply early. Apply to join us for one or both weeks.

Associate Garbologist  |  volunteer

Works with Garbologist to manage and facilitating the processing, recycling, reuse of and removal of solid waste from the village, including compost, recycling and landfill. Assists Garbologist with rotating teams of Village community members in collecting and sorting waste.

Barista/Kitchen Assistant  |  volunteer

This position is open mid July-August. Provides hospitality through the preparation and provision of espresso drinks and the cultivation of a fun and inviting atmosphere, at the Beanies coffee cart! This position requires early morning shifts and part-time work in the kitchen to complete the rest of their work hours.

Carpenter Helper  |  volunteer

This position is open in June through August to assist on the porch project and year round for very experienced carpenters to assist our long term carpenter.

Ceramic Studio Assistant  |  volunteer

This position is open June-August for three to six week stints, with some opportunities during peak winter times. The Ceramic Studio Assistant supports the Ceramic Studio Technician in welcoming guests into the Ceramic Studio and maintaining Ceramic Studio spaces. The Ceramic Studio Assistant also supports the technician in class offerings and may offer classes or art programs as appropriate.

Kitchen Assistant  |  volunteer

This position is open year round. Kitchen assistants support Head & Seasonal Cooks in the tasks of daily kitchen operation, including but not limited to: food preparation; cooking and baking; Dining Hall upkeep; sanitation tasks; cultivating an inviting and caring atmosphere both inside the kitchen and in the Dining Hall. This position can be physically demanding, with multiple hours spent on your feet and the necessity of carrying things up and down stairs. The kitchen is also a very social environment, so those who prefer social work environments will find this position particularly satisfying. Depending on the time of year and the length of the stay at Holden, there may be opportunity for this position to guest Chef or work on special projects. Kitchen Assistants work under the supervision of year-round Head Cooks, Seasonal Cooks, and Food Services Lead.

Lawns & Gardens Assistant  |  volunteer

This position is open May through October. Lawns & Gardens Assistant works under the supervision of the Lawns & Gardens Head to help maintain the grounds of Holden Village. This year, we are especially interested in short term lawns and gardens assistants who are interested in stays of a six weeks or more.

Maverick  |  volunteer

This position is open year round. Performs a variety of tasks throughout the village that involve manual labor! Helps keep the village safe and functioning in so many ways!

Media Assistant  |  volunteer

The Media Assistant supports the Media Associate in providing Audio Visual (A/V) support and training to Holden staff and teaching faculty, recording, and editing teaching sessions, assisting with the development of the audio archive.

This position is available mid June-August The Middle School/High School Assistant supports the Middle School/High School Head in implementing summer programs for guests aged 12 to 17 years old. The assistant supports age-appropriate programming focusing on leadership and social skills development while encouraging fun and hilarity. The assistant should be flexible, creative, responsible, patient, and collaborative.

Musician  |  volunteer

Music is an essential part of life at Holden Village, especially our time of Sacred Space. This person will work as a vital member of the worship team to facilitate music for sacred space and other significant moments in the village. This person will be responsible for providing and/or organizing musical offerings for the rhythms of evening sacred spaces. This will include organizing village staff, volunteers, and guests, to provide music. Collaboration with the worship assistant and the pastor will be integral in this person's role. This position is part-time, and must be combined with another volunteer position.

Narnia Assistant  |  volunteer

This position is open mid June-September. The Narnia Assistant supports the Narnia Head in implementing summer programs for guests aged 4- and 11-years old. The assistant supports age-appropriate programming that inspires fun and creativity while supporting children’s physical, mental, and social development. The assistant should be flexible, creative, responsible, patient, and collaborative.

Plumber  |  contractor

Hiring Now Responsible for the maintenance, repair, and improvements of Holden’s plumbing systems, water distribution system, hydronic boiler & heating systems, fire sprinkler piping systems and any piping that caries fluids, compressed air, or fuels.

Pool Hall Head  |  volunteer

This position is open May-September. The Pool Hall Assistant is responsible for management, preservation, and staffing of Holden Village’s historic pool hall and bowling alley located in the Village Center. Built in the 1930s, the Pool Hall has four lanes with semi-automatic pin-setters, five pool tables, ping pong, foosball, board games and a jukebox. During the summer months, the Pool Hall serves candy and popcorn to visitor and holds events like bowling nights and ping-pong tournaments.

Services Assistant  |  volunteer

This position is open year round. The Services Assistant works under the direct supervision of the Services Associates helping to maintain Village cleanliness by assisting with housekeeping and laundry tasks in the Village.

Trails Crew Member  |  volunteer

The trail crew works under the supervision of the Trails Crew Coordinator. Goes on periodic trips to maintain and repair hiking trails in Railroad Creek Valley. Love of the outdoors is essential. Work involves lifting, sawing, and hiking miles to work sites carrying heavy gear.

Carpenter  |  volunteer

This position is open now. Responsible for maintenance, repair, and general construction projects in the Village. Is responsible for supervising others using woodworking equipment and the general organization and cleaning of the shop.

Downlake Assistant  |  employee

The Downlake Assistant provides support in the care and operations of Holden Village properties located on the south shore of Lake Chelan. This includes day-to-day operations and maintenance of the facilities for Field’s Point Landing, a U.S. Forest Service facility that is a public entry point on Lake Chelan and also that of Holden Village’s Bed & Breakfast three miles up lake from Field’s Point Landing. This is a part-time, year round position.

Education Assistant  |  volunteer

This Position is open May-September. The Education Assistant supports the Education Lead in hosting the summer teaching faculty. This individual is an energetic “people person” with a desire to foster a warm sense of welcome and belonging for all faculty and guest musicians. The Education Assistant helps connect faculty to Village resources, assists with session preparation, and has the unique opportunity of attending sessions as part of their daily work.

Guest Services Associate  |  volunteer

This position is open Now. Under the supervision of the Guest Services Lead, Services Associates assist in leading both housekeeping and laundry services, to ensure public spaces are properly and regularly cleaned and maintained, Village linens and other textiles are laundered, and the Village maintains a tidy and pleasing aesthetic for all Villagers to enjoy. This role is cross-trained in both housekeeping and laundry.

Head Cook  |  volunteer

This position is accepting applications for Spring 2024 and beyond. Under the direction of the Food Services Lead, a Head cook is responsible for providing shift leadership in the Holden Village Kitchen and Dining Hall. During scheduled shifts, a Head Cook is responsible for: the safe and sanitary preparation of food served both throughout the day and at specific times (i.e. menu meals and snacks, Holden bread and granola, etc.); coordinating and training kitchen volunteers in various food preparation, sanitation, and restocking tasks; promoting a kitchen  atmosphere that balances grace and humor with the need for efficiency and timely food production; cultivating an inviting atmosphere in the Dining Hall for all through general upkeep and personal interaction. Head Cooks are also expected to dedicate some of their work time to projects of a particular focus, designated by and designed with the Food Services Lead. This position can be physically demanding, with multiple hours spent on your feet and the necessity of carrying things up and down stairs.

Interim Operations Manager  |  employee

The Interim Operations Manager is responsible for supervising the maintenance and care of Holden Village’s infrastructure following the mission of Holden Village.  Holden Village is a place of welcome on the edge of the wilderness. The Interim Operations Manager must create a safe, positive environment for staff who come to work in this setting.  Because Holden Village operates almost entirely through the efforts of volunteers, the Interim Operations Manager must be skilled in working with people who come with various skill levels for varying lengths of time. Broadly, oversight of Operations functions includes the following areas: 

  • Utilities: Power, water, septic, heat, Fire Systems and Garbology; 
  • Maintenance and Repairs, including Carpentry, Painting, and Mavericks;
  • Transportation, including Fleet Management, Heavy Equipment mechanics and operations 
  • Facilities Management including Lawns/Gardens, Building upkeep, and storage systems;
  • Vegetation Management, including logging and wood processing 
  • Budget development, regulatory compliance, and contractor management. 

Jacuzzi Technician  |  volunteer

This position is open May- September. This person will work to maintain the Sauna and the Hot Tub. They will supplement their Jacuzzi Tech responsibilities by working as a Maverick or Operations Floater. Individuals interested in this position must posses the required technical knowledge and skills.

Media Associate  |  volunteer

This position is open May 2024! The Media Associate works under the direction of the IT Lead to perform audiovisual (AV) support to Holden Staff and Teaching Faculty. This role will primarily function as the AV Tech coordinating daily AV coverage for both scheduled and special events. There may also be some IT Helpdesk activities.

This position is open May-September. The Middle School/High School Head is responsible for planning and implementing summer programs for guests aged 12 to 17 years old. The head is tasked with developing a curriculum to develop leadership and social skills while encouraging fun and hilarity. Narnia Head  |  volunteer

This position is open May-September. The Narnia Head supervises, plans, and leads programs for guests aged between 4- and 11-years old Monday-Thursday 9 AM – 12 PM. The Narnia Head is responsible for implementing summer programs that inspire fun and creativity while supporting children’s physical, mental, and social development. The head should be flexible, creative, responsible, patient, and collaborative.

The Registrar/Store/Post Office Associate is responsible for working as needed in multiple areas on the business team as needed – supporting the Holden Store Lead by selling merchandise in person and fulfilling online orders in the store, sorting and distributing mail and supporting the Registrar Lead by corresponding and interacting with individuals and groups seeking to stay at Holden Village, welcoming guests into the Village at the registration desk, processing payments, settling accounts at the time of check out, and providing other administrative support.

Snack Bar Head  |  volunteer

The Snack Bar Head is responsible for the management of the Village’s Snack Bar, a central gathering place for staff and guests during the summer months. This role is responsible ensuring the Snack Bar operations in ways that promote welcome and hospitality, sanitation and safety, and positive volunteer experiences for its staff. This position trains, schedules and oversees Snack Bar Assistants (both adult and teen short-term volunteers).

Trails Crew Coordinator  |  volunteer

This position is open May-September. The Trails Crew Coordinator works with the U.S. Forest Service to plan and implement trail maintenance projects in the Railroad Creek Valley and Glacier Peaks Wilderness. The Trail Crew Coordinator leads and supervises the members of the Trail Crew. The Trail Crew is responsible for maintaining and repairing hiking trails. Occasional overnight trips will be required for more remote destinations.

Ceramic Studio Technician  |  volunteer

this position opens Summer 2024. The Ceramic Studio Technician is responsible for promoting and supporting ceramic arts programs in accordance with the mission, vision, and values of Holden Village. The studio tech is responsible for creating a welcoming atmosphere in the ceramic studio, teaching ceramic classes, operating gas and electric kilns, and managing studio supplies. The tech is also responsible for producing pottery to be sold in the Holden Store. The Ceramic Studio Technician must be outgoing, enjoy interacting with guests, and be able to support studio operations.

Creative Technician  |  volunteer

This position is open Fall 2024. The Communications & Development Coordinator helps conceptualize, write and design Holden Village publications and online communications in a creative and visually exciting presentation that informs readers, in word, picture, and audio, about activities and opportunities to experience and live into the mission, vision and values of the Village. Applicants should have expertise in two, or more, of the following areas: copywriting and content creation, social media management, photography, videography, website content management, podcast production and graphic design.

This position is open Fall 2024. The Donor Relations & Database Coordinator helps promote Holden Village’s mission, vision, and values through engagement with current and prospective donors and the extended Holden community. This position provides the backbone support for building relationships with the wider Holden community and is responsible for all gift recording, maintaining accurate constituent records, corresponding with and thanking individuals using a CRM database. They engage people and organizations through donor communications, the annual online auction, and other outreach events.

Guest Services Associate  |  volunteer

Under the supervision of the Guest Services Lead, Services Associates assist in leading both housekeeping and laundry services, to ensure public spaces are properly and regularly cleaned and maintained, Village linens and other textiles are laundered, and the Village maintains a tidy and pleasing aesthetic for all Villagers to enjoy. The HR/Staff & Volunteer Associate assist the Human Resources Manager and the Staffing Leads with recruitment, making work assignments, coordinating employee and volunteer staff, orientations, integrating volunteers into the Village community, processing applications, administering Village processes and scheduling, and assisting with village benefits.

Program Associate  |  volunteer

This position is open March/April 2024. The Program Associate works within the Program team to design, plan, implement, and facilitate programs throughout the calendar year that support Holden Village’s mission, values, and strategic plan. Programs for which the associate is responsible include daily, seasonal, and special programs such as retreats and holidays. The Program Associate is responsible for the production of the Village’s central weekly schedule and conducting guest orientations. The ideal Program Associate is organized, creative, outgoing, community-oriented, and a participant in Holden Hilarity.

Repairs Associate  |  volunteer

The Repairs Associate is responsible for the maintenance and repair of all village appliances and miscellaneous building repairs. Works closely with the village electrician and Physical Plant lead as needed.

This position is open now. The Spiritual Life Associate/Village Musician partners with the Village Pastor to support the spiritual life of the Village through music leadership and planning worship. Creativity, flexibility, collaboration, and caring commitment are all vital to the position.

Utilities Assistant  |  volunteer

Open Summer 2024. Responsible for assisting the Utilities Lead with the maintenance, repair, and operation of our public water system, wastewater system, and major heating systems. This position is part-time and will supplement their time by assisting with other work on the Operations Team, or on other Teams.

HR/Staffing Lead  |  employee

This position is open in Summer 2024. The HR/Staff & Volunteer Leads assist the Human Resources Manager with recruitment, making work assignments, coordinating employee and volunteer staff, orientations, integrating volunteers into the Village community, benefit plan administration, processing applications, conducting interviews, administering HR and Village processes, and legal compliance related to volunteer and employee staff management.

Join our dynamic leadership team as the Human Resources and Volunteer Program Manager at Holden Village, where you'll play a pivotal role in fostering a culture of community care. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience in managing an enriching volunteer program and fostering a collaborative culture between employees and volunteers. As the driving force behind our long-range people plans, you'll collaborate with Village leaders, displaying flexibility and creativity in addressing evolving personnel situations and needs. With a skill set in human development and constructive resolution, you'll intervene when necessary, coach supervisors, and construct compelling plans to nurture a positive environment. Supervising of the Administration Team involves appreciating extra effort, motivating diverse direct reports, and ensuring success in the effort to create a resilient Village staff. As a key player in achieving Holden's mission, you'll implement human resources solutions and advise Village leaders and volunteers, ensuring compliance with employment laws. Expertise in designing wages and benefits, maintaining partnerships, training and development, workforce planning, and talent management is desired.          

The Major Gift & Campaign Officer will be pivotal in securing the financial resources that will help Holden Village remain a thriving community for generations to come. The Major Gift & Campaign Officer works with donor families and institutions, taking a strategic approach to long-term relationship development that results in significant major and planned gifts. The successful candidate will be self motivated, entrepreneurial, detail-oriented and a successful relationship builder. This is a Puget Sound-based position, primarily working from home with some travel within the West and Midwest, and regular trips to Holden. Estimated 25% of time over the course of a year will be spent traveling or on-site at Holden Village, with higher volume expected in the summer months and other high-peak guest times in the Village.

Operations Manager  |  employee

This position is open Spring 2024. The Operations Manager is responsible for supervising the maintenance and care of Holden Village’s infrastructure in accordance with the mission of Holden Village. Holden Village is a place of welcome on the edge of the wilderness. The Operations Manager must be able to create a safe, positive environment for staff volunteers who come to work in this setting. Because Holden Village operates almost entirely through the efforts of volunteers, the Operations Manager must be skilled in working with people who come with a variety of skill levels for varying lengths of time. Maintenance, transportation, construction and safety are accomplished by managing the following Operation areas: Carpentry, Electrical, Fire Systems, Garbology, Lawns/Gardens, Logging, Mavericks, Trails, Mechanic, Painting, Plumbing, Transportation, Utilities. The Operations Manager also plays a significant role in budget development, regulatory compliance, and contractor management.

Physical Plant Lead  |  employee

Reporting directly to the Operations Manager, this Lead position has oversight of the Holden Village Physical plant, skilled & unskilled operations staff, and the fleet of vehicles owned and operated by Holden Village Inc.

Program Manager  |  employee

This position is open Spring 2024. The Program Manager is responsible for supervising the Program department in accordance with the mission, vision, and values of Holden Village. The Program team consists of the Village’s Education (Education Lead, Education Assistant) and Program (Program Lead, Program Associate, Art Studio Technician, Ceramic Studio Technician, Librarian, Youth Program Coordinator, Naturalist, Hike Haus Head, and Pool Hall Head) staff. The Program Manager is responsible for creating and maintaining a team budget, hiring and staff supervision, overseeing department-wide operations, coordinating long-term strategy, and fostering a positive team culture.

Registrar  |  volunteer

this position is open now! The Registrar is responsible for all correspondence and interaction with guests seeking to stay at Holden Village. Welcomes all arriving guests and staff. Arranges all reservations and special needs for guests, assigns housing for both guests and staff (with the Housing Committee), and coordinates arrivals and departures of all persons (approximately 6,000 per year).

Utilities Lead  |  employee

Responsible for the operation, maintenance, and repair of our water filtration plant, water distribution system, septic/sewage systems, building plumbing, hydronic heating systems, and the Jacuzzi.  Also responsible for all things electrical including hydro generation (on-site training provided), power distribution system, all building service and wiring, low voltage wiring. This position is open for Summer 2024 start dates.

Director for Advancement  |  remote

The Director for Advancement is responsible for all fundraising, outreach, and communications efforts, managing a team to execute the work, and collaborating with staff across departments of the organization. The Director for Advancement works with the Board of Directors and Development Committee to determine priorities, and cultivates relationships with our current and prospective donors and supporters and actively engages in acquiring gifts. More than 6,000 people visit and/or volunteer each year. Holden Village is a 501C-3 non-profit organization. Sixty percent (60%) of our operating budget is derived from fees paid by guests; forty percent (40%) is derived from annual donations. 


Half Work/Half Pay

An option available only in the off-season (September-May) excluding the month of January and major holidays (Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s and President’s Day).  Half work/half pay is available in a limited scope for people who cannot afford to come to Holden as a full paying guest, people who have physical limitations that prevent them from volunteering full time, and Pastors on Sabbatical.

Education

Holden Village is a community where your questions are valued and encouraged. Most programs led by visiting teaching faculty occur during the summer months. However, Holden also invites faculty to teach sessions for special events and retreats throughout the rest of the year.
