Carpenter Helper

This position description is intended to describe the general nature and level of work being

POSTION SUMMARY

This position is open in June through August to assist on the porch project and year round for very experienced carpenters to assist our long term carpenter.

MAJOR FUNCTIONS

(principal duties and responsibilities; such as categories supported, staff size, volume managed, etc)

Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Work under the direction of the Village Carpenter and/or the Porch Project Carpenter according to experience.
  • Learn new skills under the guidance of Holden Carpenters.
  • Utilize carpentry shop tools and equipment in a safe manner.
  • Ensure that all work areas are kept clean, organized, and secured

UNIQUE REQUIREMENTS

(particular knowledge/skills related to client and/or agency needs)

Specific knowledge and skills include but are not limited to the following:

  • Some understanding of carpentry techniques, methods of construction and previous experience with carpentry equipment/tools is required for individuals wanting to volunteer for 2-4 weeks.
  • Individuals who are interested in volunteering as a carpenter’s helper for 5 or more weeks are not required to have previous experience – they will have the opportunity to learn on the job from the carpenter – but they must have a specific desire and enthusiasm for learning carpentry-related skills.
  • Hardworking, strong work ethic.
  • Ability to work outdoors and indoors with a positive attitude.
  • Can lift 50+ pounds. • Ability to work independently, take direction and collaborate with others.
  • Attention to safety practices and respect for procedures and processes of the Holden Carpentry Shop.

Education

Holden Village is a community where your questions are valued and encouraged. Most programs led by visiting teaching faculty occur during the summer months. However, Holden also invites faculty to teach sessions for special events and retreats throughout the rest of the year.
