Included in our short-term volunteer needs are Summer Area Heads/Lead Workers.

Requirements for Short-Term Staffers

  • Desire to be an active member of a Christian community and to be able to serve the mission of Holden Village. Village life embraces all of God’s people and is strengthened by diversity of faith, race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation and age.
  • Be in good physical health. Holden is in a remote location. We cannot quickly transport people to medical care. Most jobs involve standing for extended periods of time, bending, lifting, and carrying.
  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Make a minimum three-week commitment. For returning staff and applicants during non-peak times (September 1 to June 20) two-week stays may be considered.
  • Volunteers who are fluent in Spanish are encouraged to consider a week at Holden during Abriendo Caminos, an annual week with our Spanish-speaking neighbors from Chelan and the surrounding area.
  • Note: While the bulk of our volunteer staff comes between May and October, there are a limited number of short-term positions (a few positions in the kitchen and in housekeeping) available between November-April. Skilled laborers, such as carpenters, electricians and plumbers are usually needed.  Contact Staff Coordination for details.

Responsibilities of Holden Staff

  • Volunteers work 36 hours per week in their assigned work area. This will generally be 6-7 hours a day, 5 or 6 days a week.
  • Work assignments will be based on both your preference and Holden's needs. In some cases you will be assigned to a work area that is not one of your first three choices because of our need. Please indicate on your application if it is impossible for you to serve in a work area due to physical limitations.
  • In addition to their job, all staff members will work approximately 4-5 hours a week on additional village assignments. These assignments will include serving on garbology (i.e. together with others collecting, sorting and recycling the Village's trash) and dish teams. Other tasks will be assigned according to the needs of the Village.
  • Each staff member commits to attendance at weekly staff meetings and Vespers, a short daily worship service. This is outlined in the Community Covenant page of the application forms.

Expenses and Compensation

  • Short-term staff at Holden work on a volunteer basis. Room and board is provided. There is no other financial compensation. Exposure to creative worship, teaching sessions, crafts and other recreational opportunities are part of the volunteer's "pay."
  • Expenses while at Holden are minimal. The Holden Bookstore sells a variety of books, cds, T-shirts, sweatshirts, and personal items. Staff members should have money for medical, travel, toiletry, and miscellaneous expenses.

  • Download, print out and complete the application packet
  • Return the application packet by regular mail to: Staff Coordinator, Holden Village, HC 0 Box 2, Chelan WA 98816-9769.
