Holden Village – Diesel Mechanic (EXAMPLE – 3 Weeks)

Holden Village is seeking a skilled and hands-on Diesel Mechanic to maintain and repair the Village’s diverse fleet of vehicles and equipment. This role is essential to the daily operations of our remote wilderness community and offers the opportunity to contribute to a vibrant, interdependent village life.

The ideal candidate has a passion for working with older vehicles, a knack for creative problem-solving, and the flexibility to keep things running smoothly in a unique mountain environment. Whether you’re looking for a seasonal adventure, a year of meaningful service, or a longer-term position, this role offers a rare combination of technical challenge and community connection.

Who We Are

Holden Village is a remote wilderness community rooted in the Lutheran tradition, located in the North Cascade Mountains of Washington State. Once a historic mining town, Holden has become a vibrant center for education, renewal, and community life. Who You Are

Technical Expertise & Adaptability
You have 2+ years of experience in mechanical repair, ideally with diesel engines or heavy equipment. You enjoy diagnosing complex issues and can creatively adapt to working with older machinery in a resource-limited environment. Welding, fabrication, or a CDL are major pluses.

Resourcefulness & Initiative

You’re able to think creatively and solve problems independently, especially in a setting where replacement parts and supplies may take time to arrive. You’re proactive in finding workable solutions, adapting existing materials, and keeping equipment running through ingenuity, flexibility, and hands-on problem solving.

Leadership & Collaboration
You can train others, delegate tasks, and work cooperatively with volunteers and staff across departments. You approach leadership as service—valuing teamwork, shared knowledge, and mentorship.

Community Engagement
You’re eager to live and work in a remote setting, contribute to shared community life, and participate in the Village’s spiritual and ecological rhythms.

Commitment to Holden’s Values
You align with Holden’s mission of welcoming all people to form and renew relationships with God, the earth, and one another. You uphold our values of diversity, equality, respect, sustainability, and spirituality, and you’re committed to the principles in the Staff Agreement.
