Work Groups

A work group consists of up to 12 individuals from your congregation, college, campus ministry, neighborhood or extended family that would participate on a special work project at Holden Village.

What projects are available?
Projects include carpentry, special cleaning, plumbing, electrical work, bulk mailing and painting.

Who may participate?
Participants must be at least 18 years old and physically fit. Holden’s terrain is rocky, hilly and is covered in snow and ice during much of the work project season (October through May). Each participant must complete a health form. Spouses and partners of work group participants are expected to work on the project, but may also come to Holden as a paying guest, as space allows. Occasionally there are other jobs in the Village, but you must check ahead of time. Many times Holden is at capacity in other Village volunteer positions.

What is the cost?
Holden provides room and board to full-time workers. Special arrangements can be made for 1/2 work and 1/2 pay. This does not include lodging at the Bed and Breakfast en route to Holden, should your group choose to stay there the night before catching the boat.

Is there any way my children can come?
Unfortunately, Holden does not provide childcare, however, a member of the work group may care for the children. Children may stay free of charge.

What shall we bring?
You may prefer to bring your own tools. Please check with the project coordinator. Any personal gear over 75 lbs. is subject to a modest additional charge by the Lake Chelan Boat Company. Your grubbiest and warmest work clothes would be best. Heavy work boots or sturdy work shoes are preferred. Bring flashlights, as the electrical power is unpredictable in the winter months.

When can we come?
Holden is especially interested in having groups come from October through May. We have limited space available in summer months for those with special skills. Please submit several options for arrival and departure. We have natural block-out periods (Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, etc). Otherwise, we will try to accommodate your preferences, depending upon Village capacity and available work projects.

Where do we leave our vehicles?
Your vehicle can be parked at Field’s Point Landing, 19 miles from Chelan. Holden will provide you with parking passes for no charge.

For additional information and resources for bringing a work group to Holden, please contact a staff coordinator at staffing@holdenvillage.org. You can also submit a work group interest form (.pdf) to help us place you.
