Requirements for Long-Term Staffers
- Desire to be an active member of a Christian community and to be able to serve the mission of Holden Village. Village life embraces all of God’s people and is strengthened by diversity of faith, race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation and age.
- Be able to give one year of volunteer service and to be able to responsibly live on a small monthly stipend.
- Be at least 21 years old.
- If you have not already volunteered at Holden Village, we strongly encourage (but don't require) you to visit Holden or volunteer on summer staff before applying for long-term staff.
Responsibilities of Holden Staff
- Long-term staff are expected to work 36 hours per week in their assigned work area (or occasionally 2 half-time areas). This will generally be 7+ hours a day, 5 days a week, though some jobs have shorter daily hours and have a 6 day work-week. Responsibility, leadership, and supervisory roles are inherent in each long-term position. For these reasons, at times, many Holden long-term staff work odd hours and more than the required amount of hours, though staff are encouraged to set healthy boundaries around their personal time.
-
In addition to their job, all staff members work 4-5 hours a week on additional village responsibilities. Dish teams, garbology teams, and wood furnace stoking rotations occur on a weekly and monthly basis. Staff also help in a variety of other ways including bulk mailing, first response team, inventory, fire brigade, etc. Between work and village tasks, most Holden volunteers work from 40-45 hours per week.
-
Each staff member commits to daily attendance at weekly staff meetings and Vespers, a short daily worship service. This is outlined in the Commitment and Covenant page of the application forms.
Compensation
-
Staff members work at Holden on a volunteer basis. Room and board is provided, expenses while at Holden are minimal. Exposure to daily worship, teaching sessions, crafts and other recreational opportunities are part of the volunteer's pay.
-
The stipend available at this time is $450 per month.
-
Long-term volunteers also receive health, dental and life insurance benefits.
