People on the Move: Stories Behind Advent and Christmas
Stories Twice Told: Chronicles Revisit Israel’s Story

At a time when the number of people on the move is at the highest it has been in human history, the experience of movement is central not only to spiritual pilgrims but also to migrants who move across the state or around the world. Like our ancestors, we are “pulled” by a promise or “pushed” by danger or struggle. In the Bible, these stories are rich and endless: in distance covered and ultimately in numbers of people sent forth in loss with only the bidding and protection of a sometimes distant and impractical God.

In “People on the Move: Stories Behind Advent and Christmas,” David Vasquez will explore the stories of those whose names appear in the genealogies of Jesus and invite Village community members to reflect on the stories of those who have preceded or joined them in their own life journeys.

In “Stories Twice Told: Chronicles Revisit Israel’s Story,” Karla Suomala will look at how we revisit foundational stories throughout our life.

In connection with these sessions, Vasquez and Suomala will lead book conversations on:
  • Illegals by J.P. Bone
  • Santa Bibla: The Bible Through Hispanic Eyes by Justo Gonzalez
  • Jonah, Jesus and Other Good Coyotes: Speaking Peace to Power in the Bible by Daniel Smith-Christopher
  • What I Believe by Tariq Ramadan
