The bears around Holden, having been more visible this summer and fall, made this week particularly memorable by breaking into an old bus filled with carefully sorted "landfill" trash. The mess was extraordinary and the clean-up extensive. A song was written to commemorate the event:
Garbo’s Bear Adventure (to the tune of “Gilligan’s Island”)
Just sit right back and you’ll hear a tale
A tale of mess and woe
That started Thursday afternoon
In a place we call “Garbo”
The bear was a mighty hungry bear
The bus, we thought, secure
It ended with a crew who cleaned
A 3-hour tour, a 3-hour tour
The bear had seen the kiosk sign
And headed for the bus
He’d read the title of this week,
“Food in the Wilderness,” … “Food in Wilderness”
He made his way to Garbo-land
Where garbage we do keep
He had a feast and then he prayed,
“I lay me down to sleep”
Then Bob and Carlos came along
And sealed the poor bear in
They thought their metal and the screws
Would keep the bears from sin
When morning came and Nick walked in
Out popped a big, black nose
A leap, a crash, and broken glass
Out the window that bear goes!
The bear, it left a mess behind
Much too large to convey
All that stuff we put in cans
And throw away each day
Now left with all this landfill mess
Our heroes set to work
They filled a hundred bags at least
Where the bear had been a jerk
There were: Nick and Seth
The directors, too,
Chuck Carpenter, and his wife
Paul, Carlos, Bob and the rest
Will remember this all their life!
